West Wins First Prospect League All-Star Game

July 15, 2009

SPRINGFIELD, IL – The top players from both the Prospect League West and East divisions squared off Wednesday night for the first ever Prospect League All-Star Game hosted by the Springfield Sliders. The West All-stars came out on top 7-4 in front of over 3,100 fans at Robin Roberts Stadium.

The West All-Stars jumped out on top by scoring three in the third inning after Quincy Gem Luke Schlechte (Coastal Carolina University) tripled to score two runs. The East All-Stars slowly cut into the three-run deficit with one run in the fourth, two in the fifth, and the eventual go-ahead run in the seventh to make the score 4-3.

In the eighth inning, the West All-Stars stormed back to regain the lead on Quincy Gem’s Richie Derbak’s (Eastern Illinois University) two-RBI single. That would turn out to be the difference maker, as the lead would never relinquish.

The teams played an additional 10th inning to make sure every All-Star got an appearance. The West would tack on two more runs to make the final 7-4. Derbak’s efforts earned him Most Valuable Player honors.

Derbak finished with one hit and three RBI, while Springfield Slider Josh Parr (University of Illinois) was 2-for-2 with two runs scored. Danville’s Brett Huber (Ole Miss) finished the game for the West and also took the win. He pitched 1 2/3 innings and struck out three.

For the East, Chillicothe’s Andrew Marshall (Eastern Michigan University) had two hits, including an RBI and a run scored. Butler Blue Sox Brian Billigen (Cornell University) also had two hits on the night.

Before the game, the first ever Prospect League Home Run Derby took place. Four contestants from each division took turn slugging home runs. When it was all said and done, Richmond River Rat Tyler Bullock (Southern Illinois University) came out on top after multiple “swing offs” with the Springfield Sliders Denny Vaughn (Bowling Green State).

The Quincy Gems at will host the 2010 Prospect League All-Star game at Quincy Stadium.
