Sawyers to Lead Sliders in Inaugural Season

March 27, 2008

SPRINGFIELD, IL – March 27, 2008 – The Springfield Sliders have announced the signing of Ryan Sawyers to serve as field manager during the 2008 season.  Sawyers is in his third season as an assistant coach at Garden City College in Kansas where he serves as the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator.

Prior to landing in Garden City, Sawyers was an assistant coach at Allegany College of Maryland.  He also spent time as the pitching coach of the Chillicothe (OH) Paints Professional Baseball Club, a member of the Frontier League.  Sawyers’ pitching staff led its division in ERA during the 2004 season.  He also spent time as a volunteer assistant coach at Purdue University from 2003-2004.

Sawyers is no stranger to Robin Roberts Stadium, home of the Sliders.  He played there in 2000 as a pitcher for the Chillicothe Paints.

“It’s exciting to be a part of a great organization like the Springfield Sliders,” said Sawyers.  “The college baseball players that will make Springfield their home for the summer will not only be fun to watch but a positive part of the community.  I consider myself fortunate to get in on the ground floor of such a great opportunity involving our nation’s pastime.  The Springfield community will be proud to be the home of the Sliders.”

The Springfield Sliders are a member of the Central Illinois Collegiate League, a college wood bat summer league featuring players from across the country.  The Sliders 2008 home opener is Thursday, June 5th at 7:05 PM against the Quincy Gems.  Visit the Sliders website at www.springfieldsliders.com to view the summer schedule.  For ticket information or to reserve a date for a group outing, please contact the Sliders office at 217-679-3511.
