April 16, 2008

SPRINGFIELD, IL – April 16, 2008 – Bryce Shafer, Andrew Quinnette, and Matt Lenski will be heading to Springfield this summer to play baseball for the Sliders.  Currently, all three are playing for Valparaiso University in Indiana.  The Sliders open their inaugural season at Robin Roberts Stadium on June 5th.

Shafer is a 6’0” right-handed pitcher from Wabash, Indiana.  As a freshman he is leading the Valpo pitching staff in games started (8) and innings pitched (45).  He carries a 1-3 record and an ERA of 5.80.  Opposing hitters have struggled against Shafer this spring and are hitting only .244 against the righty.

Quinnette, a 6’1” pitcher / infielder, is also in his freshman year at Valpo.  He has spent the majority of his time at first base for the Crusaders and has started 23 out of a possible 30 games.  He is third on the team with 16 runs batted in.  His solid defense will be an asset to the Sliders as he currently has a .988 fielding percentage at Valpo.

Lenski is a 5’11” junior catcher who spent last season at Madison Area Technical College in Wisconsin.  He hit .368 as a sophomore for the Wolfpack.  The Milwaukee, Wisconsin native has started 21 games for Valpo this spring and he is fifth on the team with 10 RBI.
