SPRINGFIELD, IL April 9, 2008 The
Springfield Sliders have announced the first player signings
for their inaugural 2008 baseball season. Four players from
Creighton University have signed contracts to play for
Sliders field manager Ryan Sawyers this summer. The
Sliders season opens up June 5th at Robin Roberts Stadium.
Vicente Cafaro, a 59, 170 pound
infielder, is off to a stellar start for the Creighton
Bluejays this spring. The junior is second on the team with
a .349 batting average through 27 games. He is also tied
for the team lead in doubles (8) and triples (2).
Elliot Soto, a freshman infielder from
Algonquin, Illinois, will join Cafaro in Springfield this
summer. Soto was drafted in the 13th round by the Minnesota
Twins. He has played in 21 games for the Bluejays this
spring with 15 of those being starts. The 59 shortstop
looks to bring some speed to the Sliders lineup.
Jimmy Swift, a 62 redshirt freshman,
earned second team all-state honors during his senior year
at Dowling Catholic HS in West Des Moines, Iowa. The
infielder has 14 at-bats through 11 games with the Bluejays.
The Sliders also added a pitcher from
Creighton University, which is off to a 20-8 start.
Righthander Jonas Dufek is a 65, 210 pound freshman from
Omaha, Nebraksa.
The Springfield Sliders are a member of the Central Illinois
Collegiate League, a college wood bat summer league
featuring players from across the country. The Sliders 2008
home opener is Thursday, June 5th at 7:05 PM
