SPRINGFIELD, IL – June 8, 2008 – The
Springfield Sliders were back in action Sunday evening after
holding a free youth baseball camp for over 80 Springfield
children. The camp is available to all Springfield area
residents prior to every Sunday home game. The free camp
begins at 4 p.m. Every participating baseball player gets
free admission to that nights game.
The Sliders won what turned out to be a pitchers duel and
defensive showcase 5-1 tonight in front of a Sprigfield
crowd of 1693. Brandon Knowling and DuPage's Brian Stroud
battled each other pitch-for-pitch to keep a scoreless tie
through 5 1/2 innings before the Sliders' bats came to
life. In the bottom of the 5th Elliot Soto led off with a
single followed by a walk issued to Vicente Cafaro. Denny
Vaughn put the ball in play and reached first, on an
error, to load the bases setting the table for Andrew
Quinnette. Quinette broke the game open with a bases
clearing double to put the Sliders up for good. DuPage
scored in the top of the eighth after finally chasing
Knowling. Jonas Dufek then came in to get the last 6 outs
for Springfield and his first save. The Dragons were led
offensively by first baseman Nate Pettus' 3 for 4 night
which included two doubles.
The defense also shined with five double plays turned
between the two teams, four of which turned by Springfield.
The Sliders' middle infield of Cafaro and Soto also had a
rare 4-6-3 put out in the 5th.
