SPRINGFIELD, IL – July 11, 2008 – The
Springfield Sliders (22-4) had just enough offense and a
great outting by Bryce Butt to pull out a 2-1 victory Friday
night in Springfield against the Danville Dans (11-16).
Butt went the distance striking out 10 and walked only one
en route to his fifth win of the season. Danville starter
John Foley struck out two Sliders and walked four during his
seven innings of work.
The Sliders got onto the scoreboard first in the fourth
innings when Tyler Choate led the inning off with a free
pass. Choate advanced to second base on a wild pitch and
then onto third thanks to a Matt Lenski sacrifice bunt. Sam
Houston State's Ryan Mooney wasted no time lifting a
sacrifice fly to centerfield to give the Sliders a lead they
would never relinquish.
Springfield scored again in the seventh and were again
fueled by a leadoff walk, this time to designated hitter Bo
Kinder. Kinder moved to second on an Elliot Soto single.
Both runners advanced a base when Ryan Ashe laid a bunt down
the third base line and beat the throw. Junior second
baseman Vincente Cafaro gave knocked in Kinder with yet
another sacrifice fly to centerfield. Foley then got out of
the inning by getting Chris Gacom to roll into a double
play.
Danville made a run in the ninth inning when Dan Kazrowski
dropped a double just inside the right field line. With two
outs and Kazrowski on second, pinch hitter Tyler Park laced
a double off of the left field wall cutting the Sliders'
lead in half. Bryce Butt then got David Washington to
ground out to third to end the threat and the game.
Danville and Springfield will face each other again tomorrow
in Springfield beginning at 7:05 p.m. The first 750 Fans
will receive a free Sliders' Team Poster courtesy of WFMB-FM,
St. Jude Hospital and Rudin Printing. Gates open at 6:05
p.m.
