SPRINGFIELD, IL – July 12, 2008 –
A 45-minute weather delay
didn't stop the Springfield Sliders (23-4) from getting
their 23rd win of the season, 5-0, over the Danville Dans
(11-17) Saturday night in Springfield. Springfield's Bryce
Shafer set the tone for the Sliders throwing 7 innings of
shutout ball giving up 4 hits and striking out 9 Danville
batters. Danville's Scott Kuhns also threw very well. The
right-hander struck out 4 and walked 2 giving up only one
unearned run. Kuhns took the loss.
Denny Vaughn scored the first and winning run for the
Sliders in the 4th inning. With two outs Vaughn drew a walk
and then advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt. He
was then promptly driven in via a Matt Lenski bunt single.
The Sliders scored again in the 6th inning by starting a
rally with two outs and no runners on base. Ryan Mooney
laced a two-out single to right field and was followed by a
Jason Nantz single to left field. Bo Kinder then stepped up
to the plate and drove a ball through the right side,
scoring Mooney from second.
A Sliders 3-run, 7th inning was capped off by a Mooney
single to center which scored two. Mooney finished the
night with 4 hits in as many at-bats.
The Sliders gave up five hits, all singles, to five
different Danville hitters. Andrew Pollack, Rich Goodenow,
Brooks Kimmey, Zach Walters and Drew Haynes had the hits for
the Dans.
The Dans travel to DuPage tomorrow while the Sliders play
host to the Dubois County Dragons. Sunday is County Market
'Family Fun Days' at Robin Roberts Stadium. The first 400
kids will get ice cream treats courtesy of North Star Frozen
Treats. It is also Little League Night at the park. On
Tuesday the Sliders host DuPage for 'Two for One Tuesday'.

concession items are two-for-one. Game time on Sunday is
6:05. Tuesday's game begins at 7:05. Gates open one hour
prior to first pitch.
